Mineral Resources in India

1. Iron Ore

* Two main types of ore found in India are hematite and magnetite.

* Important hematite mines are in Bellary, Karnataka; Singhbhum, Jharkhand; Keonjhar, Odisha; Bastar, Chhattisgarh and Goa.

* Magnetite ores are mainly in Chikmagalur of Karnataka and North Arcot of TN.

2. Manganese

* Important raw material for smelting of iron ore and making of ferroalloys.

* Leading producer of Manganese is Odisha with major mines at Gangpur, Koraput, Bonai, Kendujhar, Sundergarh, Kalahandi and Bolangir

* Other mines are Dharwar, Ballari, Belagavi, North Canara, Chikkmagaluru, Shivamogga, Chitradurga and Tumkur in Karnataka; Nagpur, Bhandara and Ratnagiri districts in Maharashtra; Balaghat, Chhindwara, Nimar, Mandla and Jhabua districts in MP

3. Bauxite

* Bauxite is used in aluminum making

* Largest producer of Bauxite is Odisha with mines at Kalahandi, Bolangir, Koraput and Sambalpur

* Other major mines are at Lohardaga in Jharkhand; Bhavanagar and Jamnagar in Gujrat; Katni, Jabalpur, and Balaghat in M.P; Pune, Ratnagiri, Satara, and Kolhapur in Maharashtra

4. Copper

* Used in electrical industry as ductile and malleable

* Mixed to gold for strength

* Major mines are at Balaghat in MP; Singhbhum in Jharkhand; Jhunjhunu and Alwar in Rajasthan

5. Mica

* Nellore in Andhra Pradesh produces best quality mica

* Jaipur, Bhilwara, Udaipur in Rajasthan; Mysore and Hasan in Karanataka; Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai and Kanniyakumari in TN; Alleppey in Kerala; Ratnagiri in Maharashtra; Purulia and Bankura in WB
