Major Mountain Ranges Of Sothern INDIA are as follows-
Balaghat Range
- Originates from Harishchadra Range in the Western Ghats and extends to Maharashtra–Karnataka border.
- Source of river Manjra.
Harishchandra Range
- Lies between Godavari and Bhima rivers.
- Water divide between Godavari and Krishna river basins.
- Peak- Harishchandragad (1,422m) located in Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra.
- Famous Shirdi Shrine is located in Ahmednagar.
Baba Budan Giri Hills
- Range of the Western Ghats in the Chikkamagaluru District of Karnataka.
- Highest Peak- Mullayangiri (1,930m)
- Baba Budan was Sufi saint, introduced Coffee plant to India.
- Manikyadhara Falls is one of the attractions here.
- Kemmangundi in Baba Badungiri Hills has iron ores.
Erramala Hills
- Lies in the Kurnool district in the west of Andhra Pradesh.
- Running northeast-southwest divides Penneru and Krishna river basins.
- Belum Caves present here are the Second largest after Krem Liat Prah cave of Meghalaya.
- Age of rocks is of the Cambrian period
- Gandikota a George formed by Penneru river is known as Grand Canyon of India
Nallamalla Range
- Section of Eastern Ghats runs north-south parallel to Coromandal Coast.
- Highest Peak- Bhairani Kond (1,100m)
- Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve.
- Uranium mining began in Amrabad Tiger Reserve.
- Chenchu tribe inhabited here.
Velikonda Range
- Low mountain range, in south-eastern part of Andhra Pradesh
- Runs north-south along the eastern sides of Eastern Ghats.
- Inhabited by Chenchu tribe.
Palkonda Range
- Forms the central part of Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh.
- The meaning of the name is Milk Hills.
- Has Seshachalam Hills in West and Tirupati Hills in South.
Melagiri Hills
- Extention of Eastern Ghats, bounded by Cauvery in the west.
- Rich in Eco-Tourism, with Bannerghatta National Park, Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and extends up to Nilgiri Biosphere.
Javadi Hills
- Extention of the Eastern Ghats near the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu.
- Bisected into Eastern and Western parts by Cheyyar and Agaram rivers.
- Bheemanmadavu waterfall is a major attraction.
Shevroy Hills
- Extention of the Eastern Ghats near Salem district in Tamil Nadu.
- Highest Peak- Solaikaradu.
- Has several coffee plantations.
Panchaimalai Hills
- Low mountain ranges of the Eastern Ghats, located in Tamil Nadu.
- Pachai means Green.
- Rivers Sweata and Kallar flow
- Inhabited by Malayali tribe.
Nilgiri Hills
- Located at the Trijunction of Tamil Nadu, Kerela and Karnataka.
- Joins the Western and Eastern Ghats.
- Highest Peak- Doddabetta (2,650m), Tamil Nadu.
- Part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
Anaimalai Hills
- Part of Western Ghats running along border of Kerela and Tamil Nadu.
- Known as Elephant Hill, is South of Palghat Gap.
- Highest Peak- Anamudi (2,700m) in Eravikulam National Park, Kerela is the highest peak of southern India.
- Eravikulam National Park, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, and Anamalai Tiger Reserve is located in it.
Cardamom Hills
- Located in the southern part of the Western Ghats along borders of southeast Kerela and Tamil Nadu.
- Cardamom Spice, Pepper, Tea and Coffe are grown.
- West flowing rivers- Periyar, Mullayar and Pamba drains through it.
- AGASTHYAMALAI Hills are south to it.
- Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the centre of it.
- Major District- Idukki, Kerela
Palani Hills
- It is an eastward extension of Western Ghats.
- Palani Hills Joins the Anamalai Hills and Cardamom Hills at Anamudi Peak.
- Kodaikanal manmade Lake is a major attraction.
Mahendra Giri
- Part of the southern part of the Western Ghats, located in the Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu.
- ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) is situated here.
- Another Hill named Mahendra Giri is located in Gahapati, Odisha.
