1. Vembanad Lake

* It is the longest lake in India with an area of 2033Km2

* Located in Kerala

* It is second largest Ramasar site of India after Sunderban

* Primary river inflows are Achenkovil, Manimala, Meenachil, Muvattupuzha, Pamba and Periyar rivers

2. Chilika Lake

* It is the largest brackish water lake of India

* Spreads over Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha

* Primary river inflows are Bhargavi, Daya, Makra, Malaguni and Luna rivers

* Ramsar Wetland site

3. Loktak Lake

* Located at Moirang in Manipur

* Famous for ‘phumdis’ (floating islands) floating over it, a decomposing heterogeneous mass of soil, vegetation and organic matter

4. Shivsagar Lake

* Located in Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary in Satara district of Maharashtra.

* It is an artificial backwater created after construction of the Koyna river dam

* Spread over an area of about 891Km2

5. Sardar Sarovar Lake

* It is an artificial lake created after construction Sardar Sarovar dam on the river Narmada near Navagam in Gujarat

* Spread over an area of about 375 Km2

6. Pulicat Lake

* Located at Coromandel Coast on the border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu

* It is the second-largest brackish water lagoon in India, after the Chilika Lake

* Primary river inflows are Arani, Kalangi and Swarnamukhi rivers

* It is cut across in the middle by Sriharikota Link Road

* Pulicat lake bird sanctuary is famous for Flamingo Fest

* Natural Saline water lake located in Ladakh UT

* Line of Actual Control between India and China passing through it

* Huge lake with an area of about 700 Km2.

8. Nagarjuna Sagar Lake

* The lake is spread across Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh and Nalgonda district of Telangana

* One of the largest freshwater lakes of India

* Construction of Nagarjuna Sagar dam on Krishna river created Nagarjuna Sagar Lake

* Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary is near to it

9. Kolleru Lake

* Lies near the city of Eluru in Andhra Pradesh, between Krishna and Godavari river deltas

* Lake is fed by Budameru and Tammileru seasonal streams

* Converted into Atapaka Bird Sanctuary

* It is a birdwatcher’s paradise

10. Wular Lake

* Located in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir UT

* It was formed as a result of tectonic activities in the region

11. Sambhar Salt Lake

* Located in the Aravali hills near Jaipur          

* Lake is fed by Mendha and Runpangarh seasonal streams

* It is a major source of salt production in the state

12. Gobind Sagar Lake

* Located in Shiwalik hills, in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh

* It was created in 1962 after the construction of a huge hydel dam on the river Sutlej at Bhakra

13. Dal Lake

* Located in the heart of Srinagar, the capital of Jammu & Kashmir UT

* It is formed by five interconnected lake basins – Nehru Park, Nishat, Nigeen, Hazratbal and Barari Nambal

14.  Lonar Lake

* Located in Buldhana district of Maharashtra

* Lonar Lake was created by an asteroid collision with earth impact during the Pleistocene Epoch

* It is one of the four known, hyper-velocity impact-crater in basaltic rock, the other three are in southern Brazil

* Water in the lake is both saline and alkaline

* Its colour turned to pink during June 2020

15. Kodaikanal Lake

* Located in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu

* It is a manmade lake, created in 1863

16. Dipor Beel

* Located to the south-west of Guwahati city of Assam

* It is a permanent freshwater lake, in a former of the rivers Basistha and Kalman

* The area around it is declared as Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary

17. Ashtamudi Lake

* Located in Kollam district of Kerala

* Palm-shaped backwaters lake

18. Bhojtal Lake

* Located in the city of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh

* It was built in 11th century by the Paramara dynasty King Raja Bhoj

* The lake is fed by the Kolanas river

19. Veeranam Lake

* Located in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu  

* Build during the reigns of the Cholas in Southern India

* It is fed by the Kollidam river (distributary of the river Kaveri)

* It is a source of water for nearby cities

20. Dhebar Lake

* Also known as Jaisamand Lake

* Located in the Udaipur District of Rajasthan

* Built by Maharaja Jai Singh of Udaipur across the Gomati River

* It is the second-largest artificial lake, after Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar

21. Pushkar Lake

* Located at Ajmer in the Aravalli Hills

* Mentioned in Ramayana and Mahabharata
